Wood glue

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Wood glues are adhesives used to tightly bond pieces of wood together. Many substances have been used as glues.

The most common wood glue is polyvinyl acetate (PVA), also known as “carpenter’s glue” or “Yellow glue”. The white version of polyvinyl acetate is also used on wood. Traditionally, animal glues were ubiquitous, especially hide glue, which is still used in lutherie and restoration. Polyurethane glue (trade names include Gorilla Glue and Excel) is becoming increasingly popular, especially where water resistance is required, although water-resistant PVAs are available .

Other substances used as wood glue include

  • Cyanoacrylate (Crazy glue or Superglue) used mainly for small repairs, especially by woodturners;
  • Contact Cement for veneers;
  • hot melt for temporary uses;
  • Epoxy mainly for exterior uses;
  • other synthetic resins including resorcinol, urea-formaldehyde, phenol formaldehyde resin, etc.
  • cascamite

Wood glue bonds tightly to wood, but not to itself. Therefore, woodworkers commonly use surprisingly little glue to hold large pieces of wood. Most wood glues need to be clamped while the glue dries.

Makhaira

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Makhaira (μάχαιρα, also transliterated machaira or machaera; an Ancient Greek word, <PIE *magh-, “to fight”) is a term used by modern scholars to describe a type of ancient bladed weapon, generally a large knife with a slight backwards curve. In period texts, μάχαιρα has a variety of meanings, and can refer to virtually any knife or sword, even a surgeon’s scalpel, but in a martial context it frequently does seem to refer to a type of one-edged, curved sword. Modern scholars distinguish the makhaira from the kopis (an ancient term of similar meaning) based on the direction of the blade curvature.

These weapons were of various sizes and shapes, being regional, and not exclusively Greek. Greek art shows the Lacedaemonian and Persian armies employing curved weapons, but Persian records show that their primary infantry sword was straight, similar to the Greek xiphos (cf. acinaces).

While Xenophon states that xiphos was more conventional among Greek armies of his time, he recommended the makhaira for cavalry, “μάχαιράν μεν μάλλον ἡ ξίφος ἐπαίνουμεν” (Xenophon, 12:11). His reasoning concurs with the general practice of arming cavalry with curved swords through the ages. Greek art along with Xenophon’s further commentary suggests that the sword he intended for the cavalry was wider than the more modern sabre; more akin to the falchion.

The Koine of the New Testament uses the word makhaira to refer to a sword generically, not making any particular distinction between native blades and the gladius of the Roman soldier. This ambiguity appears to have contributed to the apocryphal malchus, a supposedly short curved sword used by Peter to cut off the ear of a slave named Malchus during the arrest of Jesus. While such a weapon clearly is a makhaira by ancient definition, the imprecise nature of the word as used in the New Testament cannot provide any conclusive answer.

Makhaira entered classical Latin as machaera, “a sword”. In modern Greek, μαχαιρι means “knife.”

Battlement Mesa

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Battlement Mesa is a large prominent mesa in western Colorado in the United States. It sits along the Garfield-Mesa county line, between the Colorado River to the north and Plateau Creek to the south. It is visible south of Interstate 70, visible between the towns of Rifle and Parachute, stretching for approximately 15 miles (24 km) east-west. The community of Battlement Mesa along Interstate 70 takes its name from the mesa.

The mesa is similar in geology to the nearby Grand Mesa to the south, and to the Roan Cliffs to the north. It consists largely of a layer of basalt atop underlying layers of sedimentary rock, including a layer of the Green River Formation.

Indispensable party

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

An indispensable party is a party to a lawsuit whose participation is required for jurisdiction or the purpose of rendering a judgment. An indispensable party may usually be joined at the discretion of the judge. Often, an indispensable party is any party whose rights are directly affected by disposition of the case.

The indispensable party is often a prudential standing requirement. That is, while the parties currently involved in litigation have an actual case or controversy, judges will not proceed without the indispensable party. This avoids potential double litigation and possibly inequitable outcomes.

In patent law, a patent owner must be a party to a patent infringement suit by an exclusive licensee because the patent owner’s rights would be directly affected by a finding of invalidity or unenforceability of the patent claims.
