Ywain the Bastard

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Ywain the Bastard, also called Ywain the Adventurous, is a son of King Urien of Gore and a Knight of the Round Table in Arthurian legend. He is often confused with his half brother Sir Ywain, after whom he was named. While the older Ywain is the child of Urien and his wife Morgan le Fay, King Urien sired Ywain the Bastard on the wife of his seneschal. He is encountered frequently in Arthurian romance as a hearty and sensible warrior. His death comes at the hands of his cousin Gawain, ironically during the Quest for the Holy Grail. The two meet, disguised by their armor, and decide to joust. Ywain is mortally wounded and it is not until Gawain takes him to a hermitage for his last rites that he realizes he has killed his own cousin.

Hudson’s Bay’s Vancouver flagship store is a six-storey building in downtown Vancouver.

Located at 674 Granville Street, on the corner of Georgia, the cream terra cotta building with Corinthian columns was built in 1927. The current store was built on the site of another HBC store from 1913. The last additions were made in 1949.

The original HBC store in Vancouver was a small storefront on Cordova between Carrall and Abbott. Another HBC building, the stone-trimmed brick Fur and Liquor Warehouse, was built on the railway side of Water Street during the warehouse construction boom in Gastown of the 1920s.

Reviews

Once More With Feeling

“Have you ever wondered what a jump-up beat, a church organist with dextrous fingers but only three working keys and a synthetic horn might sound like when tossed together with instructions to keep it simple, OR ELSE? You haven’t? Doubleclick have, and the sound is captured as All In One Light. On the other side, a heftier beast, War And Peace And Quiet, keeps the sense of fun but takes a much darker turn, until the xylophone coda. Appealingly odd.” -Robots and Electronic Brains, Fanzine (December 2000)

Nässjö

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Nässjö (pron. Naeschoe) is a town in Småland, Sweden, and the seat of Nässjö Municipality in Jönköping County. It has a population of 16,463 (2005).

Nässjö was for a long time only a rural village with agriculture as the dominant occupation. The turnpile was the Swedish railways. The southern main line railway finished in 1864 passed through Nässjö. Later, other railways were inaugurated, whereby Nässjö, due to its geographical location in the country, became an important junction. A line to Katrineholm was opened in 1874, and that year also the opening of the Oskarshamn line; the one to Halmstad in 1882; to Kalmar in 1914.

As a result industries moved to Nässjö, and the population increased. The most important industries were wood industries due to the forest covered Småland province area, at a time when it had become possible to factory manufacture the wooden chair (a.k.a windsor chair).

Nässjö attempted to get a charter, which was granted in 1914, making it one of the now defunct Cities of Sweden. It is since 1971 instead the seat of the much larger Nässjö Municipality.

Its population continued to increase throughout the 20th century. In the 1940’s production of the fire tools began, and the industry “Eldon AB” was for a long time the largest industry of the town.

The hardrock band Backyard Babies comes from Nässjö.

Osmotic stress technique

Monday, December 31st, 2007

The osmotic stress technique is a method for measuring the effect of water on biological molecules, particularly enzymes. Just as the properties of molecules can depend on the presence of salts, pH, and temperature, they can depend significantly on the amount of water present. In the osmotic stress technique, flexible neutral polymers such as polyethylene glycol and dextran are added to the solution containing the molecule of interest, replacing a significant part of the water. The amount of water replaced is characterized by the chemical activity of water.

List of transformer patents

Monday, December 31st, 2007

A transformer is the means interposed between the electrical source and the electrical load circuit for controlling the voltage, current magnitude, or phase. More specifically, a transformer is an electrical device that transfers energy from one circuit to another by magnetic coupling with no moving parts. A transformer comprises two or more coupled windings, or a single tapped winding and, in most cases, a magnetic core to concentrate magnetic flux. This listing also includes generic transformer systems, that is, systems in which a transformer supplies an output circuit. Transformers here are used to convert between high and low voltages, to change impedance, and to provide electrical isolation between circuits. Below is a list of transformer patents.

Furniture + 2

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Furniture + 2 is the last EP released by Fugazi. It was recorded in January and February 2001, the same time that the band was recording their last album, The Argument, and released in October 2001. It follows much the same format as Fugazi’s previous single, “3 Songs”, in that it features one funky midtempo song sung by Ian MacKaye, one brief punk rock blast sung by Guy Picciotto, and one instrumental piece.

Both “Furniture” and “Hello Morning” date back to the late 1980s; indeed, “Furniture” was the third song performed at Fugazi’s first show on September 3, 1987. Portions of “Number Five” can be traced back to a song called “Turkish Disco” which was recorded as a demo in March 1997 and released on Fugazi’s Instrument Soundtrack in 1999.

Drexel Triune

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Drexel Furniture - Triune Collection was produced 1959 to 1970 as a furniture collection by Drexel Furniture Company. Drexel Furniture Company was a division of Drexel Enterprises, Inc. at the time that this furniture collection was introduced. The name “Tri-une” indicates it is the merging of three centuries of design into one group. Referring to 18th, 19th and 20th century furniture style elements incorporated into the furniture. Thomas Sheraton design elements are used freely in many pieces. Other elements from the Adam Brothers were included with an emphasis on architectural “built-ins”. Influence from Hepplewhite and the previous furniture designers add to the Directoire, French and American Empire periods for this very particular mid-20th century collection. Multiple varieties of wood and stone were used on individual pieces over the years. There is documentation that painted pieces of the line were sold before 1966.

In 1959, Johathon Terry & Pierre Semple coordinated the corporate introduction of the product line which continue to today. The production today is continues by Drexel Heritage (DH) of Japan, which produces the complete 1967 line of Drexel Heritage.

The Triune Collection won the Grand Prize and “Obelisk of Achievement” presented by the Mahogany Association for excellence in design and craftsmanship in mahogany furniture for the year 1960.

Bentwood

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Bentwood is a term used to describe furniture made by steaming wood, bending it, and letting it harden into curved shapes and patterns, and is most often used in the production of rocking chairs, cafe chairs, and other light furniture. The process was developed by Michael Thonet, a German who received a patent in 1856. Many other furniture manufacturers have used the process since the expiry of the patent in 1889.

The process is still in widespread use for making casual and informal furniture of all types, particularly seating and table forms. It is also a popular technique in the worldwide production of furniture with frames made of heavy cane, which is commonly imported into European and Western shops for today’s consumers.

Tax wedge

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

The tax wedge is the deviation from equilibrium price/quantity as a result of a taxation, which results in consumers paying more, and suppliers receiving less.

Following from the Law of Supply and Demand, as the price to consumers increases, and the price suppliers receive decreases, the quantity each wishes to trade will decrease. After a tax is introduced, a new equilibrium is reached where consumers pay more (P* → Pc), suppliers receive less (P* → Ps), and the quantity exchanged falls (Q* → Qt). The difference between <math>Pc</math> and <math>Ps</math> will be equivalent to the value of the tax.

While both consumers and suppliers pay some portion of the tax, the distribution depends on the structure of the demand and supply curves, respectively. As long-run supply curves tend to flatten over time, consumers tend to pay an increasingly larger portion of the tax.

In 1792, he changed the spelling of his name, moved to New York City, and opened his own business, which eventually employed over a hundred workers. He became known as one of America’s leading cabinetmakers by selling furniture for relatively low prices. He is most famous for his simple style, a reaction to the imported French designs popular at the time. Duncan Phyfe’s furniture can be seen in the White House Green Room.

Around the World (basketball)

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Around the world is a basketball variant played by two or more players. It is often played to improve shooting skills. In this game, a series of shots must be made in and around the key, allowing a player to advance to the next position. The first player to make a shot at each position advances until he reaches the end where he wins the match.

Rules

Play typically starts at the edge of the key on one side of the basket. If the shot is made, the player advances to the next position mark on the key. When a player has made shots on every position mark, they then advance to the corner of the free throw line. When a free throw is made, the player then advances down the other side of the key back toward the basket.

After the player has moved around the key, a shot must be made from directly under the basket. After that the player must make a shot from the center of the three point line.

If at any point a shot is missed, a player may ‘chance’, meaning he gets to take a second shot. If the second shot is made, the player advances as normal. If the player misses the second shot, then the player must go back to the start. The player has only one chance the whole game.

At any point a player may decide not to take the next option, and cease play. If a player exhausts his options or chooses to stop, play proceeds to the next player. The sequence of positions and shot options (chance) vary drastically between players and regions.

Footstool

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

A footstool is a piece of furniture, the purpose of which is to provide comfort to a person seated in, for example, a chair or sofa. It is typically a short, wide, four-legged stool with a padded upholstered top, in fabric, leather or sheepskin. It allows the seated person to rest their feet upon it, supporting their legs at a mostly horizontal level, thus giving rise to use of the term footrest, for this item.

A shorter form of footstool may be used for support when a person’s (usually a child’s) feet do not reach the floor while seated. In this case, the person’s lower legs are not outstretched horizontally; the footstool is simply placed under the feet. A piano footstool used in conjunction with a piano bench does just this.

There appears to be no distinction between the two forms in terms of naming. The main distinction in terms of function is that in the first form, the lower legs are usually held straight (perhaps one crossed over the other) while in the second form, the knees are bent as is expected.

Generally, any object of suitable elevation may be employed as a makeshift footrest. Another seat, a desk, or a table may serve. These options are usually considered inconsiderate since feet, and especially shoes (by their nature) tend to collect more dirt than a person’s working area or pants.

The term footstool may also be applied to shorter stepladders, but this usage isn’t as common. A heavily upholstered footstool of the first described form is called an ottoman. The Streit Slumber Chair featured a two-part footstool having a removable seat high upholstered top which revealed a hidden “slipper-compartment”.

Footstool may also refer to the act of a man resting his feet on his man-slaves.

Dominion Chair Company

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Dominion Chair Company is the name commonly used to refer to the wooden furniture manufacturing company that operated from 1860 to 1989 in Bass River, Nova Scotia, Canada. The company still operates a general store.

The hand-crafted furniture produced at Dominion Chair (as it is locally known) was sold to retailers throughout Canada and the northeastern U.S.. The company employed between 40 and 70 from the local area at any one time from the late 19th century to its end. At the time of their founding the Maritime home furnishings retailer Bass River Chairs choice their company name because of their then retailing Dominion Chair furniture.

George Fulton and William Fulton, brothers and great-grandsons of the first settler of Bass River, “Judge” James Fulton, began by making wood furniture out of their home in 1860. (Hemeon, 1987) George continued by founding a “joint stock company” in 1875, naming it Union Furniture and Merchandise Company. (Ibid) The name Dominion Chair Company Limited was adopted in 1903. Operations continued despite at least five devastating fires, a severe explosion, a four-month long general strike of workers in the 1979, and a change in ownership that resulted in a further name change in 1985. A sixth fire in February 1989, completely destroying the plant’s main building and facilities, did irreparable damage to company’s ability to operate. Manufacturing was moved briefly to nearby Debert where operations ceased in the mid 1990s.

Contraflexure

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

The point or points of contraflexure are the locations in a beam where no bending occurs. In a bending moment diagram, it is the point at which the bending moment curve intersects with the zero line. Knowing the place of the contraflexure is especially useful when designing reinforced concrete beams. This is because where contraflexure occurs the reinforcement does not have to be placed and can if necessary swap faces of the beam.

However to omit reinforcement at the point of contraflexure entirely is inadvisable as the actual location is unlikely to realistically be defined with confidence. Additionally, reinforcement should run beyond the point of contraflexure to develop bond strength and to facilitate shear force transfer.

Since customs laws and dealers often stipulate an age of at least a hundred years for any item to be legitimately called an antique, the term is sometimes used to describe a collector’s item that is technologically obsolete; for example, an older computer or retro toy.

This term is also used to describe new objects designed to appear much older than they are, as with reproductions of old devices and furniture with a distressed (lightly damaged or artificially worn) finish.

More rarely, modern antique may refer to an item from the modern era which is also old enough to qualify for the simple description antique.
